Madeiras Worst Floods Storm Mudslides - Day after (21/02/10)

Madeira, a popular tourist island, had now over of 40 deaths, 30 missing and 18 injured.  This is a consequence of  floods and mudslides. The authorities think that the number of deads stuck in the mud could rise.

The Portuguese army and Police has sent some specialists and teams with dogs to find missing. The specialists of the army are search teams and engineers who are specialize in building and repairing bridges because several bridges were swept away or damaged by the floods.

As for the airport, it was reopened this morning after being closed yesterday. It was full of British tourists trying to get home after having their flight canceled.

There is also concern for more rainfall which is predicted for this afternoon.

This was the deadliest and most devastating storm to hit our beloved Island.

The Portuguese Island of Madeira was struck by a violent storm which has killed at least 32 people so far (20/02/2010) in what is to be considered Madeiras worst catastrophe of the last 100 years. Flooding of the entire city of Funchal and landslides pretty much all around the island, swept away cars and knocked down houses as this violent storm took the Island by surprise.

Flood on Avenida do Mar - Funchal

Avenida do Mar, the main avenue of Funchal, was completely flooded, full of slough, earth and stones.
